Movement Screening

As a training facility that promotes physical fitness our goal is to help people build strength, improve stamina, enhance body composition, and generally feel better. However, it is often too easy to quickly start building on these important components of fitness without first addressing the mobility, stability, and orthopedic issues that are so prevalent in every population within our society. Not identifying and correcting these issues first is like trying to drive a sports car with the parking break on. No matter how big and powerful the engine is eventually something will break down because of the resistance coming from the brake being on. Similarly, no matter how strong and fit you become it's only a matter of time before something "breaks" because of the poor movement patterns and disfunction that many of us are dealing with. That's where the Functional Movement Screen comes in.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN?

Put simply, the FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness.

The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. This scoring system is directly linked to the most beneficial corrective exercises to restore mechanically sound movement patterns.

We monitor the FMS score to track progress and to identify those exercises that will be most effective to restore proper movement and build strength in each individual.

The Performance Pyramid

FMS-Hierarchy

Gray Cook, a renowned physical therapist and developer of the Functional Movement Screen, describes athletic performance in 3 levels. The base level represents your ability to move through fundamental patterns, the middle tier represents your movement efficiency expressed as power, performance, or fitness, and finally, the top tier represents your sport-specific skill. Being underdeveloped in the "movement" tier will limit your ability to perform and improve at the "performance" and “skill” tiers.

If you have plateaued and you’ve failed to see improvements in your lifts, if you're still unable to perform most group workouts at the prescribed weights, if you're looking to become more well-rounded as an athlete, or if you want to improve your overall performance, then the Functional Movement Screen and the exercise prescriptions that come from it are for you.
